What Does a DIT Do?
The Digital Imaging Technician (DIT) plays a key role in the visual and technical workflow on set. Working alongside the Director of Photography (DoP) and post-production, the DIT ensures that the visual intent is maintained from capture through delivery, while safeguarding all original camera data.
Flexible On-Set, Near-Set & Hybrid DIT Workflow
With our mobile setup—including a fully equipped DIT bus and flexible Magliner system—we’re able to work on-set, near-set, or in a hybrid configuration, depending on your production’s needs. The DIT bus functions as a mobile digital lab for color grading, data management, and monitoring. It features a 65″ OLED TV in a controlled, comfortable environment—ideal for DoPs and directors to review rushes, approve looks, and make informed decisions on set. Whether positioned next to the camera or slightly off-set for optimal space and performance, we maintain full access to backups, look development and grading—without compromising creative flow or technical precision.
Pre-Production
- Test and validate the DoP’s visual concept for its technical feasibility across production and post-production workflows.
- Plan and define the technical workflow with the post-production team.
- Test camera settings, LUTs, and visual concepts in collaboration with the DoP.
- Set up consistent data structure and naming conventions for media handling.
- Calibrate monitors and color-critical tools.
- Collaborate on look development with the DoP, creating LUTs and visual references to guide the project’s aesthetic.
- Define and manage a consistent color pipeline, including color space handling from camera acquisition through final delivery.
- Prepare a secure and scalable backup strategy tailored to the production’s data workflow.
Post-Production Handoff
- Organize and deliver footage, metadata, and looks to post-production.
- Assist in generating viewing copies or dailies as required.
- Generate proxy files for editorial and client review workflows.
- Document backups and ensure all data is handed off securely.
On-Set (Production)
- Monitor image quality and perform technical QC in real time.
- Apply LUTs and adjust camera settings to match the intended look.
- Manage secure, verified backups of original camera data.
- Coordinate closely with the camera team and video operator for live monitoring and setup changes.
- Act as the technical bridge between the camera department and post-production.
- Perform on-set dailies grading to maintain visual continuity and creative intent.
Data Archiving & Long-Term Security
- Create verified archival backups using LTO-6 and LTO-8 tapes, following industry standards for long-term data preservation.
- Ensure all original camera data, metadata, and project assets are securely stored and ready for future access or delivery needs.
- Use checksum verification and multiple redundancy layers to guarantee data integrity over time.
Our workflow and standards follow professional guidelines set by the BVK (Berufsverband Kinematografie e.V.) and the AAC (Austrian Association of Cinematographers), ensuring both technical integrity and creative consistency throughout production.
